As Sure As the Promises of God

As Sure As the Promises of God

You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised,” (Hebrews 10:36, NIV).

As Christians, we have certain heavenly possessions, and this knowledge helps us put our earthly possessions and welfare in proper perspective. Evidently, some to whom this was written had been imprisoned, and others impoverished for their faith. You suffered along with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions (v. 34). Peter called it …an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you (1 Peter 1:4).

These possessions are attainable; they are not in question; they are ours, given to us by the One whose name is “Truth” (John 14:6), and whose Word is trustworthy. We “know” (Hebrews 10:34) this beyond all doubt.

Furthermore, these possessions are valuable. We must not throw away your (our) confidence; it will be richly rewarded” (v. 35). With this assurance, we are able to bear up under any suffering or persecution which comes our way (check out  Romans 8:18).

Knowledge of these possessions is supportive for it helps us cope with longstanding troubles. In our text, we “have need of patience” to get through them and do “the will of God.” Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near (James 5:7-8).

Lastly, realization of these possessions is imminent. In just a little while, he who is coming will come and will not delay (Hebrews 10:37). “He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon. “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus (Revelation 22:20).
