President Obama – A Sapling

I can’t speak for you, but as for me,  I’m getting tired of presidential speeches that sound more like whiner of the week propaganda than problem solving strategies. Two weeks after a speech-to-the-nation you cannot remember the topic.  I can’t help asking my self as well as asking my friends, how did we get to this point? Did the smartest people in America get us here by design; perhaps all this was just an accident waiting to happen; perhaps it was just run of bad luck.  But as you look over the landscape you are forced to believe   that nature itself could not have bungle things up so badly.   This marathon of stupidity and buffoonery has got to stop.

I’m convinced after three years of rhetoric that it is just plain bad management and ideological leadership that consider its ideological theories more important than the people they were called to serve.   President Obama is a lightweight in a heavyweight title fight. He’s full of high sounding words and phrases but empty of deeds done. The enormity and complexity of the job is too much for a man who never even ran a pizza parlor in his career

To put it bluntly, in 2008 we optimistically picked a boy do a man-sized job.

The evidence for such a conclusion grows inexorably on a daily basis. He reminds me of a tired inexperienced hunter in the woods after a long day of seeing nothing; suddenly he  sees and hears a rustle in the bushes, without delay he  lifts up his 12- gauge shotgun and sends a scatter shot in its direction hoping that he will hit something and not somebody. Like the president’s former economics adviser Larry Summers, said, “There’s no adult in charge. Clinton would never have made these mistakes.”

President Obama leaves you feeling detached. He rules from afar. He stands out like a sapling in a forest of mighty oaks.  Why is he so immature?  Because for most of his life his friends have flattered him into believing that he is mature beyond his years when the opposite is the reality. He’s a sapling that has not developed into a fruit tree. He listens to the flattery, “You’re the best speech maker the presidency has ever known,” colleagues and media sycophants told him repeatedly during and following the 2008 campaign. Now those same friends admit that the Obama inclination to talk his way out of his problems has become a trite and tedious dodge. It was Hillary Clinton during the 2008 campaign—not some Republican—who challenged Obama, with foresight: We’ve had enough speeches, she said. What about some action?

Or try the scathing response of the liberal New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd, who wrote: “Obama is still suffering from the Speech Illusion, the idea that he can come down from the mountain, read from a teleprompter, cast a magic spell with his words, and climb back up the mountain, while we scurry around and do what he proclaimed.”

I don’t want to hear that worn out phrase any more, “Let me be clear!” His speeches are anything but clear. Speeches that are filled with excuses and finger pointing are not problem solvers nor do they inspire hope. For his first couple of years in office, it was standard Obama fare to make George Bush his whipping boy. More recently, it’s all the rich people—the people who fly jet airplanes and who waste their money on tax-deductible charitable gifts.

The American Presidency is the highest office in the world. It is embarrassing to see it being demeaned and being made inconsequential. –President Lyndon Johnson said that “Being president is like being a jackass in a hailstorm. There’s nothing to do but to stand there and take it.”  He was proven wrong and so we may hope that President Obama will be as well!
